A
Semi-Return - 25/09/2003 |
It's
been a while, due to me moving into my apartment near London and
starting work. Being without the net at home until late October
doesn't help either. Subsequently this is a mini-update from work.
Things won't be much faster when I do get back but I hope to have
a couple of projects finished by then. One is rather self-indulgent
and might not go on the site, but I'm having a lot of fun doing
it nonetheless. The other should be interesting and maybe useful
to Gundam fans, I just need to finish it! Also, as I'm without net
at home my Yahoo e-mail address
will languish unchecked until late October. But enough of all this.
Several months ago, when Newtype Asylum had just shut down and Chris
was batting around the idea of hosting model reviews on MAHQ
and thereby deciding to scrap the gallery section, he asked me if
I'd like to add the Crossbone Gundam
manga chapter 1 to my Images section.
So I have. It sits alongside the other two translated mangas I have
hosted, both of which were projects I assisted RGZ
with. My other small addition to the site for now is the past three
weeks worth of my weekly mini-reviews.
With this whole employment lark, I've only really managed to watch
movies, so reviews of Pirates Of The Caribbean: Curse Of The
Black Pearl, American Pie 3: The Wedding, Tears Of The Sun
and Underworld are now online (step back through the archived
weeks to see them all). More when I manage it.

So,
Another Sparse Week - 30/08/2003 |
Due
to the chaos of real life only a tiny update, just to add the latest
weekly mini-reviews. It's been
another empty week this time, just including reviews of Terminator
3: Rise Of The Machines and Rust, a webcomic. Yesterday
I started reading the old Mobile Suit Gundam novels (Tomino's 3
part alternate telling of the original series, serving as the basis
for some of the backstory added later) so expect reviews of them
in the coming weeks, as well as Gundam: The Origin volume 6 and
G-UNIT volume 3 (at last).

Absence And Sadness - 29/08/2003 |
I
see you bastards are still here. Shame on you. The rollercoaster
of madness that is trying to get an apartment in the west London
(well, Feltham - which is about 30 minutes outside London by train)
area whilst also purchasing goods for said apartment AND organising
things for commencement of Job with Fujitsu
Services... all got the better of me. So hence the lack of updates,
work or mutterings. Also no weekly
reviews these past weeks as I've had nothing to put in them.
Should be one up this weekend though. Maybe I'll also get to finish
some lineart and a side project I've been working on for this site,
before the hell of packing begins next week. In the meantime, entertain
yourselves with the links down the left there. I just added a few
more and I'm certain many of you have never ventured to some of
the others. Specifically, have a look at the "cameraphone/webcam
voyage around the world" that Warren
Ellis did at Die Puny Humans
the day before yesterday: here,
here,
here,
here,
here,
here,
here,
here,
here,
here,
here,
here,
here
and here.
During my absence I still checked my e-mail, and it was on this
Sunday gone that I, and many other people on the Gundam Mailing
List, learnt of the death of Sam 'exZERO' Baker over a week previous.
Sam had been a GML member for longer than the two years or so I've
been on there and in the past few months he has been a firm and
regular contributor to MAHQ. He
became an active part of the chat room as well as feeding me piles
of lineart to clean up for Chris. Anything of his I worked on is
already on this site, and I have the sad task of finishing off his
last few SEED scans soon. He was an enthusiastic, passionate and
opinionated anime, manga, film and comics fan. His presence shall
be missed.

Return
Of Origin And New Reviews - 26/07/2003 |
It's
about time I did some more reviews that
I've been meaning to. The first of these is the manga Gundam:
The Origin Volume 5. I have also decided to add a page to be
updated most weekends that I'll fill with weekly
mini-reviews (they're only one paragraph or less each) of stuff
I finish during the previous seven days. The first of these is up
too, with reviews of The Hulk, Adventures In A TV Nation, Gasaraki
and Planetary/Batman: Night On Earth.

Again
I've been catching up on lineart that I did a while ago but hadn't
put up Images pages for. This time I have
Gundam Sentinel Lineart as well
as Misc. Gundam Lineart for
general viewing. And with that, the new host for the site is christened
with its first proper update.

The
Word Moved To A New Home! - 17/07/2003 |
Okay
then, looks like my main concern (the limit placed on the number
of files) has been dealt with and the new home of The Word
can go live. Operations have now moved to http://www.bad-words.com
with more bandwidth, a sexier name and... stuff. I'll throw some
e-mails to Fantoysia &
Chris at MAHQ to change my links,
as well as updating those at the AOZ
Blog and Gundamwatch
myself. The old site locale will continue until the end of the month
as normal, but without updates. At the end of July I shall attempt
to downgrade it to a free account, which means it will still be
present (complete with a handy notice pointing people elsewhere)
but it shall probably assault lesser browsers with pop-up adverts.
This news item is the same on the old
URL and the new URL,
before anyone stumbles across this site and gets confused.

- 12/07/2003 |
Plans
for the website are afoot, thanks to the upgraded Bravenet.
However, there are some issues preventing developments, as I cover
in a rant entitled "Bravenet
Dips Into Chaos". Dr.
Core's website, the second place to rise from the ashes of Newtype
Asylum, is slowly getting itself online. A lot of the content
is incomplete or missing at the moment but it's looking like it'll
be an interesting read.

I
spent the last two days in a car and being interviewed and assessed
for a job with Fujitsu

here's a rant composed of two days' Observations
From The Road. The stash of randomised title images has swelled
to six as I write this. I'll probably be adding more over the weekend,
exciting I know. However, I don't think I'll be introducing them
to all the other pages until I can afford to upgrade to this hosting
to include my own CGI.

Newtype
Asylum To Shut Down - 23/06/2003 |
Whilst
doing some quick browsing just a moment ago, I noticed that Newtype
Asylum is shutting down in its current incarnation (check the
URL for details for
now). Whilst I had, through his posts in the last year to the GML,
realised Dr. Core's decreased interest in Gundam fandom of late,
I didn't think NA would break up. Over my few years of being a Gundam
fan I've seen NA change its focus slightly, try several new things
(some of which failed, some of which succeeded) and increase in
size as, primarily, a reviews database for merchandise. It was my
first port of call when I decided to buy my first proper Gundam
model kit (the HGUC Rick Dias)
and it has remained a valuable reference to me and my fellow Gundam
fans. It will be missed. Here's to the spin-off sites and the parting
NA staff, cheers!

Gear And Warren Ellis - 23/06/2003 |
Despite
being rather busy at the moment, I did find a few minutes to finish
up some stuff I'd been working on over the last week or two. Big
thanks to Havail Maserec (hopefully I got the name right) and Neo-Era
for a mass of new pictures and replacements for the Gaia
Gear page. I also hammered out a joint review of From
The Desk Of: Volume 1 & Volume 2 and Bad Signal: Volume 1
- three collections of columns from Warren
Ellis. Random banner image at the top of this page is working
now (I actually stumbled across what appears to be the same php
script that Die Puny Humans
uses, which was a stroke of luck). Just need to knock up more than
two of them sometime (and insert it into all the other pages, urgh).
Now to finish up my Advance

quick update today, being lazy as I am. I finally got around to
reviewing the second volume of the Gundam

The
Comics Addiction Continues - 12/05/2003 |
Yes,
I'm still consumed by comics at the moment. Oh well. As you'd expect
then, it's another part of my Trade Paperback collection under the
reviewing eye today - the hefty New
X-Men: Volume 1 from Grant Morrison and a crew of artists. I
wrote the review in random note form first, which appears to have
produced a wandering and overly large final piece, apologies. I
also wrote a comics related article, Free
Online Comics And An Attack On The Underground in which I attempt
to stick to talk about free comics and end up wandering off on tangents.
I've also realised that I perhaps overreacted when I worried about
my bandwidth ten days ago. Blame it on some poor maths on my part
but all is fine in the world of bandwidth once again.

Ahhh,
Bandwidth - 02/05/2003 |
Thank
god that month's over. Yes, the bandwidth is back and with it the
site. I'm a little worried about the high-traffic (in terms of MB)
from the first day so I might cut back on the number of new pages
of images I host publicly. Alternatively I might take advantage
of the PlanetQuake hosting
and dump some there... I'd ideally like to upgrade my hosting (an
extra GB of traffic a month) to be on the safe side, but I can't
afford that and I don't think I've got much chance of conning my
brother out of the cash! It's not really a problem yet though, just
thinking conservatively. Anyway, enough rambling. No new content,
just posting to say "yay site!" and to mention the bunch
of extra links I've thrown into the box down the side. Have a gander
if you're bored.

You're
Not Wearing Spandex, Why Is This? - 29/04/2003 |
The
downtime for my site has triggered a bit of a reviewing spree for
me. So, I decided to delve into three of the Marvel
Comics trade paperbacks I picked up way back during the 2001/2002
university year. I've gone through a bit of a comics revival recently
so expect to see me delving into the rest of my TPB collection for
review material, as well as the exquisite hardcover New X-Men Volume
1 I picked up a couple of weeks ago. Apologies to the Gundam-orientated
readers but there's still two mangas that I'll probably get to soon
enough. First up then is The
Punisher: Welcome Back Frank from the fantastic Preacher
team of Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon. At the opposite end of the
Marvel comics spectrum is Ultimate
X-Men: Volume 2 - Return To Weapon X from Mark Millar and Andy
Kubert, with Cable: The Shining
Path from David Tischman and Igor Kordey somewhere in the middle.
If all this mention of those angst-ridden, spandex-clad mutants
gets you wondering what the convoluted X-Men world is up to now,
or if you're looking forward to the X-Men 2 movie that's released
now(ish), then have a glance at X-Fan.
Another horrible sentence, they're becoming a habit.

SEED Gallery! - 26/04/2003 |
As
I feared, the horror of the Gundam SEED gallery proved too much
for my website to cope with and 2 of the 3 gig monthly bandwidth
was eaten up in about 12 days. I took the gallery down but alas
I was too lazy and busy to alter the redirection page over at PlanetQuake
that pointed to this site as the host. I presume, in some kind of
desperate lust for images, the SEED fans then raped my galleries
here and consumed the final 1 gig of bandwidth at a rate of just
over 100 meg a day. So as I post this news none of the few remaining
visitors can actually read it! Ho hum. The moral of this tale, kids,
is that mass marketed, mainstream pandering anime is bad for a website's
health. The gallery is now gone for good with all the redirects
everywhere pointing to its new host, http://www.oywq3.com/seed/.
A big thank you to Slade for hosting it over at www.oywq3.com,
the site of his own Quake 3 mod based on the One Year War period
of Gundam. I'd advise checking it out if you're a fan of multiplayer
games.
As life can never resist kicking you when you're down (relatively
speaking), Chris chose this month to add me to the links over at
MAHQ. So what could have been
a delightful month of fresh victims popping along to have a look
at my poor little site, has instead turned into a month of fresh
victims attempting to investigate and being told that I have foolishly
run out of bandwidth. Ahh, the bandwidth thing is almost as terrible
as that last sentence. Anyway, big thanks to Chris for the link.
This downtime gives me chance to write a bunch of reviews, which
you'll obviously see in the news item above this one...

MP3
Fun And Frolics - 19/03/2003 |
I
came across an interesting site today as it was Slashdotted.
Audioscrobbler, described
on its site as something that "grows to know what music you
like by monitoring what songs you play on your computer. From this
information you can discover other users that share some or all
of your taste in music". You download a plugin for your mp3
player (several are supported, including versions 2 & 3 of WinAMP)
and that reports the ID3 tag of the track you have just played to
the server. As a registered (free obviously) user it builds up a
database of the music you listen to and after 500 songs can recommend
other music you might like, based on what other people with similar
tastes listen to. It also serves as a repository of stats on the
music and listeners. These are an interesting way to spend the bored
minutes of your day. The use of your net connection is incredibly
minor (unnoticeable for 56kers like me).
It's nothing earth shattering but it is an amusing little diversion
and has an ever increasing (as more Slashdotters sign up to it)
user-base that should certainly make things interesting. You can
find my stats under the name Psycho_Al
and my brother's under the name SnowiE,
not that you're likely to be interested. In suitably nerdy fashion
I have now linked the band names on this news page to the corresponding
stats page on Audioscrobbler. I will continue to do this on this
page and any others I update in the future. You just can't be nerdy
enough as far as I'm concerned....

Up - 25/11/2002 |
Welcome
to my multipurpose website. This isn't anything special, just a
dumping ground for things I want online (all my mIRC
scripting primarily) and a place to rant. Yes the design is really
simplistic, even by my usual simplistic design preferences. There
are two reasons for this - firstly the site will be slow enough
with the advert crap as it is without throwing dozens of small images
at you - secondly I don't see there's any reason for this to be
any prettier. On the subject of the adverts, yes they're large and
space consuming. If you're getting pop-up ads then I suggest not
using the shit-heaps that are Netscape and Internet Explorer. Get
Phoenix (possibly
undergoing a name change) and enter the wonderful world of a good
browser. Oh and I go under the nickname "Psycho Al" for
most online undertakings but I'm dispensing with that for this site.
