The Need To Believe In Something - 12/12/02

That's (obviously) the fundamental underpinning of all belief systems, be they religions, spiritual movements or philosophical disciplines and "ways to live your life". So many people seem to have this one, in my opinion, huge flaw in their selves. They all need something to believe in to get through the day. They don't care what it is as long as it doesn't grate too strongly against those things they have chosen to dislike in life. Those that hate religion can be found getting their belief enema from things like Tai Chi, Yoga and Feng Shui. Because rearranging your furniture to improve your life is a symptom of the same disease that drives people to kill those that differ from their path. The need to believe.

If someone needs something to believe in to get through the day then they need help, not some brainwashing "new way of life". They need to learn to accept life, it's ups and its many downs and most importantly accept themselves. Fuck "born again". It's ridiculous. So many people reach middle age and then suddenly turn (or turn back) to religion or spiritualism of some kind. Oh my god, why do you suppose this could be? Maybe they're reaching the point in their life where they realise their youth is gone and its downhill from there on? The realisation that they will die has dawned upon them? Their every fibre suddenly urges them to find some kind of meaning in what they've done and what they have left? No no no, that's far too sensible. Yes I suppose believing in something is better than them all killing themselves or others (a minor notch up) but still...

What bugs me most is sheer number of people that have this problem. I see so many blindly following something just because it makes them feel more secure and fills in all those gaps in their lives with vague or insane explanations. Maybe everyone has this problem and it's just part of human nature. Maybe I'm too damn arrogant to see it in myself or just too stubborn to acknowledge it. I don't think this is the case but then what do I know.
